What I'm learning from Drawing Tutorials Online

I'm learning to draw much better now that I'm using the website, Drawing Tutorials Online.  It's well worth the effort to spend time on this site if you are just learning to draw or are a seasoned artist.

The work above is a study I did from the book: Cyclopedia Anatomicae by Feher.  It's a great book on Anatomy. 

I have found a new website that I joined to improve my drawing skills at

Learning from the Natural Way to Draw

I am learning from the book, "The Natural Way To Draw" by Kimon Nicolaides in which I have the freedom to "scribble. He has quite a drawing plan for for students and I find it exhausting but well worth the effort. I am using a ball point pen and watercolor pencil to make this sketch. With pen and ink, it's like a performance, you don't know what you get and if you make a mistake you move on so there is no going back.

When I paint, I like to make little thumbnail sketches or paintings. I liked this one so much as a painting

Quick Sketch Painting

I've been reading the book "The Practice and Science of Drawing" by Harold Speed which is a good book on drawing and creating good artistic work. This is a very simplistic quick sketch of Plate 23 of the book. I've got a long way to go to master the paint but that is my challenge. I noticed that I had a difficult time with the paint but I was working on a small scale. ( It's more like a thumbnail sketch.)

I went to Nathan Fowkes Class and he admonishes us to turn off the TV and do hundreds of the kinds of sketches. His work is amazing and worth the effort to take his class.

I continue to work on the Asaro Planes of the Head and site sizing.
Once I scan the image in I can really see the mistakes I've made.
(It's there for all the world to see.)
I need to work on my line which I'm trying to hide as I go.
I have not really got the handle on using the newsprint and the charcol so I've decided to go to charcol paper to see if
that works any better... we'll find out.

This is the current Asaro Head that I'm working on. As you can see it's still in the cartoon phase.

I continue to use the John Asaro Planes of the Head sculpture that I own. I site sized this on news print but as you can see, parts of the nose need work. I'm doing another version as I write this.

I like to do Panarama pictures for the depth of the look and feel of the frame. The frame is key to any good movie and every element plays a role.

Finally, I got off my butt and starting working on my cast. I've worked the light and dark in with out much concern for detail since there is so much of it... sometimes detail will take away from the drawing so I just let it rip and got my darkest darks and lightest lights in.

Get the right cast

Working with the right cast in the beginning is crucial. I discovered that the more simplistic the cast such as this nose is much better than the complicated on I've done earlier. ( Since this nose is not mine but the school's I'm left trying to get a new more simpler cast. ) I do have the Asaro head that is also simplistic and does make use of plans of the head which is very important for lighting and modeling.

I did this in pencil after a 2 hour sitting and everything
was sized according to careful measure and it
does look like him.

Cast lighting and photoshop filters

I am facinated by using real photographs and manipulating them in the art filters. I took this picture and darkened the background and manipulated the foreground cast with the dry brush art filter. A closer look reveals the simplicity of the geomitric pieces of the cast. Keeping it simple actually allows your mind to fill in the image work ... which is done in painting all the time.

Site Size in progress

As I continue my work in Site Size work I am finding that I need a lot of practice getting the image on paper correct. I just checked in photo shop and the image is too wide and the angle is incorrect. I will continue with the study.... but I can see where I need more careful restrictions in the drawing... I'll use it as a value study, but this is the crux of the problem for me.

Timing is everything

Timing is everything in photography. I shot this a bit of a nearly rainy day in Anthem Arizona... I need a new camera... then I can really play with the image! HA!

Looking for more art work

I am enjoying photoshop with paint dabs filter in the artistic filter pallet. I got this picture of Dietmar and then began to use the paint dabs filter and it looks like a painting that could have been done in the 40's. It has an edge that really makes the picture turn out. ( I also did it on the portrait that he took of me the other day and I added to this site. I like the single light source and the imagery.

April 21 new look

I went to my favorite art school today in the San Frenando Valley at the Art Acadmeny and it's inspired me to get back to my art work. I hope to post my work on this site.

This is a statue that I photographed in the the room with only a skylight to light the image. It's a single source for light much like Rembrandt painted when he worked. There are no cross lite areas and the walls are even painted a mid gray to absorb and light. I enjoy this technique.
